The Cotswold Bloody Mary Competition, Stone Barn near Aldsworth

It was a fight between a slice of cucumber and a slither of celery and the result was a draw. The second annual Cotswold Bloody Mary Competition, sponsored by Cotswold Life and held at the magnificent Stone Barn near Aldsworth, saw last year’s winner, the Wheatsheaf from Northleach, tie with newcomer Cirencenster’s Made By Bob.

Both used Clamato in their concoction and the judges, Mike Lowe of Cotswold Life, Sir Roderick Llewellyn, writer Dom Joly and Cotswold Life columnist Adam Edwards, could not put a cigarette paper between the two contestants whose bloodys could only be told apart by the vegetables. With a Solomon-like decision it was decided that they should come came equal first. The White Hart in Stow-on-the-Wold was a close third. Other notable attempts included bloodys from the Hollow Bottom at Guiting Power and the Seven Tuns at Chedworth.

After the final decision had been made, and the trophy presented by default to Made by Bob, the contestants and judges sat down to possibly the best BBQ steak and homemade chips in our hills and laughed at a bad Welsh joke by Sir Roddy Llewellyn.
