Rose Hamson Flowers: Painting the picture

Leading contemporary florist Rose Hamson takes an unusual approach to helping brides get the look for their special day exactly right:  she uses quick watercolour paintings as well as photographs in her client presentations.   “The technique is helpful in showing people how you’ve interpreted their brief, and how you suggest the budget could best be shared between all the different features on the bride’s list.   It really helps a bride focus on her priorities, and designs can then be scaled up or down accordingly.”

The bride’s bouquet needs to be particularly personal and treasured, and Rose recommends borrowing from a royal tradition which will no doubt be continued at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April:  including flowers or foliage which have special meaning for you.   The Queen’s wedding bouquet of white orchids included a sprig of myrtle from a bush grown from myrtle in Queen Victoria’s bouquet, but many brides choose rosemary to remember loved ones who are not able to be there to celebrate  the marriage (“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance”  Shakespeare’s Hamlet).  Or perhaps cut something from their own garden.   “Attention to detail, without fuss, is so important” says Rose “it provides depth and finish to any event”.

Based in a converted barn in Bidford on Avon, Rose handles wedding contracts all over the south of England  -  from Chelsea restaurant or City of London church to a marquee in a Cotswolds garden:  “I love the buzz of wedding work, and seeing all my beautiful brides so happy” she says.

Rose trained with top international florist Jane Packer, after a business career in advertising in London where she realised how much she enjoyed the beautiful flower displays at the top hotels and restaurants she visited.   “Flowers say so much about you and your business” she says “and I decided that corporate and events floristry was the business for me”.   She started Rose Hamson Flowers in 2008.

She has also developed a retail range of top quality seasonal flowers for independently-owned Warner’s Budgens, of Moreton in Marsh, Broadway and Bidford on Avon, and is category sponsor for Best Hotel Restaurant in the Cotswold Life Food and Drink Awards 2011.
